Introduction

Silicon esters are silicon compounds that contain an oxygen bridge from silicon to an organic group, for example, Si-OR. SiSiB® PC5411 [also called Methyl silicate 51] is a transparent liquid containing 51% silica (SiO2) by mass, and is created by condensating on average molecules of 3 tetra methoxy silane.

Applications

The tetraalkyl orthosilicates ( also called orthosilicic acid esters) most commonly used as starting materials for sol-gel.

Polysilicic acidesters are condensation products obtained by incomplete hydrolysis or orthosilicic acid esters. They are also be used as starting materials for the sol-gel process.

Compared to ethyl silicate, SiSiB® PC5411 has a higher silica concentration which brings cost advantages, but methyl alcohol is generated in the usage environment, so measures are necessary to counteract this. It is used as a raw material for synthetic quartz.
